Reflecting on 2024: Abundance, Reciprocity, and the Power of Ethical Storytelling

As the year comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the journey I’ve taken with Generosity Guidance (GG), my company dedicated to empowering nonprofits, foundations, and grassroots organizations. Starting GG in October 2023 felt like a leap into the unknown, but 2024 has shown me the profound impact of connection, trust, and the art of storytelling.

Trust at the Core of Fundraising

One of the most vital lessons I’ve learned this year is that fundraising is about so much more than raising money—it’s about trust. Working with organizations like the Toronto Waldorf School Foundation (TWSF), I’ve seen firsthand how relationships and transparency inspire generosity. The new annual fund- the Luminous Campaign, for instance, not only raised funds but also built a sense of shared ownership among families, faculty, and alumni. This level of engagement reinforces the importance of aligning values with action.

Lessons from Nuquí, Colombia

One of the most transformative experiences of the year was traveling to Nuquí, Colombia, for a workshop on ethical storytelling as a board member. Meeting individuals from grassroots organizations working in harmony with nature left an indelible mark on me. I had the privilege of connecting with:

  • Daniel Dualiby from Guardianes del Mar - Guachalito, who tirelessly protects marine biodiversity.

  • Chola, one of the incredible women behind Zotea Gastronomia Chocoana Auténtica, a community-led restaurant showcasing the culinary traditions of the Chocó region.

  • Latia, the Head Chef at La Kuka Resort, whose leadership and artistry in the kitchen reflect the power of community-driven hospitality.

These organizations exemplify reciprocity—giving back to nature and community in equal measure. They’ve inspired me to think deeply about how storytelling can amplify the voices of small charities and grassroots movements, ensuring their vital work reaches a wider audience.

Looking Ahead

As I step into 2025, my vision for Generosity Guidance expands. I hope to:

  • Collaborate with small charities to craft compelling narratives that inspire action.

  • Continue working with education-focused nonprofits to build capacity and foster excellence.

  • Offer workshops, like the one planned for June 2025, to share strategies and tools for ethical fundraising and storytelling.

A Closing Note of Gratitude

This year wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible people and organizations I’ve had the privilege of working with. To those who supported me, collaborated with me, or simply inspired me from afar—thank you.

I’ll leave you with a beautiful sentiment from Robin Wall Kimmerer’s The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World: "Reciprocity is the heartbeat of nature’s economy." May we all carry this spirit into the new year, building communities and systems rooted in generosity and care.

Wishing you all an abundant and harmonious 2025!
